As we wanted to be around Broome to see the Staircase to the Moon, we decided to try our luck going to Cape Leveque on the Dampier Peninsula. We had been told by three people that the bus would make it up there.
We took off and rattle and rolled up the Cape Leveque Road for about 35 kilometres 20k of which is unsealed before turning around as the road was too badly corrugated, the sign at the start of the road said Strictly No caravans or motorhomes. This was a time DABUS is not a motorhome but a bus.
Disappointed but glad we didn't do any damage to DABUS, we went in search of a campsite. The first road we went up was very thin and when the red soil turned to white, we decided to get out and go for a walk. Our walk lead us up and over sand dunes, so we reversed back till we found a crossroad and drove back out.
Our next stop was Quondong Point, 30 kilometres north of Broome, still not an easy place to get to as it also had heavy corrugations and the last 200 metres was a loose sand track, but we pulled up and loved the spot, overlooking the Indian Ocean. We decided to stop for several days before heading south down to Broome. We had great views, had whales right in front of us and magnificent sunsets, such a sight to behold.
On our walks we found hermit crabs down on the beach.
One of our neighbours had been out fishing and came and gave us a huge piece of Spanish Mackerel.
On the last day Ted and Jean, from Mount Gambier, arrived and set up below us, they came up and had happy hour with us. We exchanged details in the morning before we took off, back into Broome

Cuppa Can’t believe anyone told you the Cape Leveque road would be suitable for Dabus! Great that you got to see the whales just offshore. Aren’t the hermit crabs great? (They make good bait for fishing off the reef too).
