After leaving the Boab Tree Gravel pit, we went past another free camp that was on private property with camping around their dam. We saw a 4x4 and caravan pulling out of the free camp and we both commented on how nice the site looked. Up the road we were overtaken by the 4x4 and caravan. After about 20km's down the road we saw dust and Alan thought we were coming up to roadworks. We arrived where the dust had been to discover the 4x4 and caravan had rolled several times coming to rest on there side. The couple were lucky to walk away with only a few cuts and abrasions but their 3 month old caravan and one year old 4x4 were destroyed. After ensuring they were okay and help was on their way, we made our way into Derby.
We checked out the shops (and Tourist info Fred!!!) and went down to the pier for a look. Derby has the highest tides in Australia. Their highest tide was 11.8 metres, it is amazing to stand on the pier and watch the force of the water rushing in. Our next mission was to go in search for a new tyre but to no avail. We have to get one sent from Perth up to Broome. We left town and headed up the Gibb River road and pulled into the Emanuel Yard Road Rest Area. We wanted to go out to Windjana Gorge but without a spare tyre we were both hesitant. It was disappointing as it was and area that we both wanted to see.
We went back into town were there was a market on, topped up our water and went and checked out the Boab Tree Jail and the Longest trough before driving 70km's south of Derby to Langi Crossing / Telegraph Pools were we chilled out for a couple of days. Langi Crossing was a single lane bridge crossing the Fitzroy river which was closed down in 1953 after the Willare bridge was built. We can sit on the banks of the Fitzroy River and watch birds and both fresh and saltwater crocodiles. Beautiful days of 30 degrees and evenings by the fire .... tis so good
