Crew Frivolous
After an extremely windy night the morning was the same. First thing after breakfast the boys again got their fishing gear out. From the cliff face to the water's edge was about 6 meters. This meant hard work if a decent fish was to be retrieved. The boys decided to have a play.
The Barracuda was diced up and used as bait under a float. There were some big trevally to be seen in the depths but they would not take the bait. The morning soon disappeared with the boys trying everything to get a hook-up. From the cliff we could see a couple of Groupers, who must have been the local residents, cruising backward and forward. They were monstrous in size and they were amazing to watch as the boys teased them with the bait. Fishing done and the remaining piece of Barracuda was tossed in. One of groupers swam up and gulped down the unhooked bait.
Camp packed, we headed for the Steep Point sign indicating that we were at the westernmost point of Australia. Out we got and took many pics.
We headed out but needed to make a detour. On our way back we witnessed many bays we had seen the day before but today they looked so much better. The sun was out and the colours of the water was so vibrant. We also saw a pod of dolphins chasing a school of fish.
We wanted to visit the False Entrance Blowholes. We had heard from previous campers that it was a must see. Well the views from these cliffs were amazing also. Many a whale could be seen close in and towards the horizon. The Blowholes put on a disappointing show but we could see given the right tide and swell they would be awesome.
We made our way back to the bitumen and headed for the Hamelin Pools. This was a place where we could see Stromatolites. Stromatolites are a rocky looking lump seen in the water and are the simplest and oldest form of life on the earth dating back 3.5 million years. Our history lesson done we made our way back and then camped at the Hamelin Station Stay. The station was well maintained and the best we had seen for a while.
We quickly cooked up a feed then made our way to the camp kitchen/dining room. This venue had it all including an old style fireplace which was alight. It was very comfortable and we enjoyed a great game of cards.
