It's a good job that we did the heli hiking yesterday as it was raining this morning... again. It was a bit dssappointing as we were hoping to go back to Lake Matheson for a walk so we could see the famous mirror reflection of the Alps. Not now.
Instead we drove up the coast towards Greymouth, where we were going to have a look round but as the rain got worse as the day progressed all we saw of Greymouth was a supermarket carpark where we had our lunch.
We decided to head further up the coast and stopped at Punakaiki, famous for the Pancake rocks and some bowholes. We made sure we waited to high tide before going to see them so they would be at their most impressive. The Pancake rocks are layers of limestone that are shaped in a way that they look like stacks of pancakes funnily enough. There are loads of these stacks all stood up next to each other and scientists still aren't certain why this has happened, aparently it's completley unique. Next to the rocks are a few blow holes that were firing out huge jets of water when the big waves hit. It was still pouring down at this point so we got asolutley soaked. We managed to dry off in the van before making our way up to Westport for the night.
