Jurmo had been recommended to us by some Finnish sailors as there favourite island. It was owned and run by Sweden for 300 years then Russia for 100. When the swedes had it, it was a pirate island. The Pirates used the trees to light fires to lure sailing ships to crash ashore, then they robbed them just as was done in Cornwall. The authorities got fed up with this so every tree and bush was burned to the ground. There are still very few trees. Another lovely day brought about my first swim, not much swimming but at least I got in the water. There are about 5 family's living on the island all year and a tiny church.and grave yard.
