Day 14 (LaTrobe University) - Bendigo, Victoria Australia
I spent a lot of today socializing, which is always fun. My RA, Lil, graciously took me to the police station so I could see about getting a proof of age card.Clubs won't take my Michigan Driver's License as a proper form of identification/proof of age. I refuse to take my visa to a club because if I lose it I will have to make a nice little trip to Canberra where the US Embassy is to get a replacement. In order to get a proof of age card I would have to pay $55, wait 2 weeks, supply passport sized pictures, other copies of ID, and someone who is either a doctor, policeman, or teacher who lives here in Australia would have to sign off that they've known me for a year and I am who I say I am. Ha, no. Then Lil had this brilliant idea: why not get an Australian driver's license? That will be accepted. It would be cheaper and wouldn't take as long. We went to the Vic Roads place where one goes through the drivers training process and stood in line for like ever (I felt like I was at the secretary of state's office). Finally, a very nice gentleman gave us the great news that I could get a full Australian license that would be valid for three years in replacement of my current driver's license. Heck yes! And it's only $40-something. It was funny watching two employees get a book out explaining how the Michigan driver's license works and what everything means. I tried explaining it to them, but they wanted to read it." An operator license.Okay, oh restriction - corrective lenses. Why is it standing up and not laying across like this one? Oh, he's not 21 yet." The card will still take a few days to get, but tomorrow I have an appointment to get all the paper work filled out. Money!
