The drive from Undara to Hughenden was quite scenic, however the countryside was SO DRY! The poor farmers are dealing with so much with their stock n their land let alone the stress on their family's financial situation.... We stopped at several places of interest along the way, a couple of graves (one that was a mailman from the 1880's who was killed by some local Aborigines). Porcupine Gorge was also well worth a look, they call it Australia's mini Grand Canyon. It stretches for 27km & is very steep sided n deep. We viewed it from one of the lookouts which gave us a good birds eye view, very impressive. Hughenden presents as an impressive little outback town, only population of 1200 but there seemed to be a nice pride n care about the town. Acer a couple of lunchtime beers we then explored the Flinders Discovery Centre which had a full scale replica of a Muttaburrasaurus Dinosaur as well as a large fossil collection n lots of other info n memorabilia from the local Hughenden area. We stayed in a great little van park called Allen Terry. Charlie cooked up a great chicken n chorizo casserole then a little before sunset we headed 10 km out of town to Mt Walker lookout with a cheese platter n some drinks to enjoy the 360 degree views but especially to see the sunset. It truly was one of the most spectacular sunsets we have ever seen! Even well after sunset the horizon sky hues were just beautiful! We certainly were mesmerised by our time there. Road access & a variety of viewing areas at Mt Walker were certainly worth recommending! We concluded our day with Charlie's yummy casserole n a couple of games of cards that Bill n I were victorious in. Overall through the holidays the card games would have worked out fairly evenly with our team successes in crib n 500. After a good sleep n pack up we made our farewells with Anne n Bill as we head our different ways from here. They also have an extra week to wander home where we plan to get back to Lismore all going well late on Friday! Anne n Bill have been great travelling mates n hopefully there will be more adventures to come with them in the future...presently we are on another gravel road that Charlie has found n heading towards Muttaburra, Barcaldine n all going well Blackall for our destination later this afternoon. The countryside is just so parched looking we really hope rain comes soon as it's already been 4 years, so disheartening for the station owners! We're just passing an interesting stony outcrop raised up in the middle of a totally flat landscape, it's called Tower Hill. We are passing many station properties, would be a challenging life out here! A real highlight of our journey today was seeing 8 brolgas, such elegant n beautiful birds!
