Got to Archer River Roadhouse about 4 o'clock after a pretty good run through we did about 283km all up. Archer River was a nice place to stay, we got a lovely grassy camping site, icy cold beers 4 sale n a yummy hamburger 4 dinner, we were very spoilt! A cruisy evening discussing yesterday's travels n what was to come, the roads so far have been pretty good overall, better than we expected...this morning we are now packed up n heading towards Chili Beach, just past the Wenlock River on our way into Chili Beach we stopped n fossicked around the now defunct Batavia Gold Fields, lots of large machinery remnants still evident as well as other examples of a busy place in times past. Will have to investigate some more about the history of this area.....it would have been a challenging n isolated life! Greg J you would love the machinery, not sure it would have fitted in the combi! Mt Tozer viewing platform gave us a look over the terrain n Mt Tozer itself. About another 26 km along we reached Lockhart River, the local Aboriginal town, it was pretty dilapidated compared to Hope Vale last week. Just out of Lockhart River was the Airfield that was used by American n Australian forces in WW2. Interesting reading about the huge number of troops stationed here n that at the time Airfield cost in excess of £500000. The airfield itself is still in awesome condition n would cost tens of millions of $$ to build now! Not much further along we reached today's destination of Chili Beach, what a beautiful spot! Anne n I could have easily stayed 4 a 2nd night but Ch n Bill were keen to keep moving on towards The Cape.
