So we drove from Rockhampton to Rainbow Beach where we would be based and briefed for a night prior to Fraser Island. Nice drive here through a valley of huge pine trees and once again very picturesque. Once at our Resort (Dingos) we were briefed on how the following day would unfold and then put into our groups of 9 people per 4x4 jeep. That evening had a few beers in the bar with everyone to get to know who we would be spending the next few days with. Also went to Carlos Sandblow that evening which was a huge open space of desert land where we sat and watched the sunset, went up here with a guy called Dan from Eastbourne, and a girl (Charlie) who had also done diving in Thailand with the same guy I did!! What a small world hey!!
The following morning we packed the cars up and set off to get the ferry to Fraser Island. Andy did the first stint of driving and we drove down onto the beach where we boarded the ferry for the short crossing to the island. There were five jeeps from our resort heading over to the island that day and we were first to arrive at the first stop of Lake McKenzie. Spent a couple hours chilling out on the beautiful sand around the freshwater lake before we headed out to the camp area. Four of the jeeps all stayed at the same camp area and we all sat around drinking playing a few drinking games and just having a laugh. Went fishing down on the beach with Matt & Karri (couple other English guys in our jeep) where we caught nothing and got cold and wet!!!!
The following morning we couldn't find half our food and it turned out we had left some of this out and when we found the butter lid with teeth marks in it we realised the old Dingos had struck in the night and had our supplies away!!!
We headed off to Eli Creek in the morning which was a little bit dissapointing after our initial expectations, however after this we stopped off at Mahoon Shipwreck which was pretty impressive. It was a shipwrecked boat obviously, which had beached on Fraser Island and coupld be walked around and viewed. After this we stopped at Lake Aloe which had loads of small turtles swimming in it and they would come up to the banks being very inquisitive or maybe just looking for food, come to the wrong place here guys the Dingos had ours!!!! After this we headed to the furthest northerly point you can get to on the island called 'Indian Head' this was certainly saving the best to last. We climbed up the side of the rock face where along a short walk you could look over the edge of the cliff and in one viewshot there were sharks, fish, turtles, manta ray and even whales surfacing just a few metres out, really was a spectaculor sight to see and all in the one area of the water, fantastic......... The days food intake was not so good as all meat supplies had been robbed from under our noses the night before, however one of the groups did give us some of their chicken for dinner so we did not go totally hungry that day, and hey at least the beers on the roof were still intact!!! That evening all 5 jeeps camped in same area and big drinking fest was had by all. Music playing on stereos and real good laugh had by all.
The following day was our final half day on the island and we headed to Lake Waby for a final laze about and swim. What we were not told was that it was a 1km trek across a big sandblow which once in the middle practically felt like you were in the sahara with nothing but sand all around you, not so much fun to be honest!!!!
Whilst on the trip everybody except 3 Taiwanese girls in our jeep had a go at driving across the sand island and was a truly awesome experience. Really good fun and you can see why so many people have so many good memories and stories about Fraser Island a fantastic time was had by all.
