Once arrived at Nadi airport we booked a ferry ticket to take us to our island of choice (Naviti up in the north Yasawa islands) and the bus then took us to our mainland accomodation. This was a really nice place with swimming pool etc and deffinatley a good choice for a one night stopover here.
The next morning was an early start with a 7.15am pick up to take us to the ferry port. We boarded ferry at 8:30am and then had a 3.5 hour journey up to the small Naviti island. Spent some of journey in the air conditioned cabin but then decided to venture out into the outside heat, which after 2 weeks in NZ was pretty damn warm!!!!
A boat came and picked us up from the ferry and took us back to the 'White Sandy Beach Resort' where we would be spending our next 6 nights!!! This was booked in advance from a couple reviews on the internet and the place could of been a terrible place to spend next 6 nights as there is a real mix of good and bad resorts scattered around these islands. However lucky for us we had picked a real good one and the staff made our entire stay a real memorable and good fun stay.
After meeting all the staff (Larry, Lapse, Scoby, Sally, Captain Ace, Vina, Maria, Meree, Tapu, Abu....... Yes there was a few of them!!!) I took a walk 5 mins over the hill to a little deserted beach called 'Honeymoon Beach' Very peaceful and crystal clear water so chilled out for the rest of the afternoon here.
Following morning the sound of beating drums awoke me at 8am. The staff sound the drums 4 times a day for each meal and also afternoon tea. All food and drink was provided ofor us so really was a no hassle chill out on a beach type affair going on here. It actually rained all day today which apparently was not a regular occurance here (glad to hear that!!!). Ended up spending day sat around dining area chatting to Dave and Claire (couple from England staying here for a few nights). At 5 pm we went and joined the staff for a volleyball match which they clearly play far too much and we looked like total amateurs playing amongst them!!! This was followed up by dinner and then the evenings entertainment. This involved a welcome song followed by a demonstration of the Bula dance which all guests were then invited to participate in. No holding us back and we were all up there chucking out some Bula shapes.......... The followed this up with some games like musical numbers, musical statues, and Limbo dancing. Basically just like a childs birthday party, and yet incredibly good fun made so entertaining by all the staff. Goes without saying a few beers were consumed during the evening.
Next day was a beautiful blue sky day which was spent sprawled out on the beach and in hammocks. Same itinary as previous day with food and volleyball and then evenings entertainment. Will and Katie from Torquay had turned up during day and had a good laugh with them. Very strange when people arrvie and leave and you kind of feel like your'e on Shipwrecked awaiting the new arrivals to be brought ashore!!! Fun and games of the entertainment was followed up by Andy doing some magic tricks (which for anyone who doesn't know he is pretty damn good at doing all kinds of tricks that basically mess with your head and leave you asking the question, HOW?). Anyway a lot of the locals were watching these and thouroughly enjoying them but also not entirely sure how it was all happening......... IThe look in some of their eyes was like a question of 'who is this devil' I swear I thought they were going to burn him there and then, Very entertaining and more so to watch the locals faces in astonishment.
On the Thursday we headed over to another beach on the boat with no resorts on it and had a picnic here. The guests were ;eft with few of staff playing volleyball on beach and relaxing whilst some ofstaff went out on boat to go spear fishing to catch lunch!! The fish they brought back was unbeleivable catch and all caught with a spear and the very long holding of their breaths!! Fantastic. I helped gut the fish and passed them over to Sally who was cooking up lunch on an open fire. Beautiful lunch and I dont think I will ever experience anywhere near as fresh fish as that again!! Awesome. Back at resort the usual afternoon and evenings proceedings took place and then a mass of people entered the resort. Word had got around about the tricks and people were flocking in to see them!! I think half the island had trekked along beach to see them!!! Who knows boats from afar may dock tomorrow to see what this witch is up to!!! Burn the witch, burn the witch. haha.
On Friday it was all of our last night at resort. Mine, Andy, Dave, Claire, Will and Katie. Most people who visit these islands only spends a night or two at resort and then moves onto another island hopping from resort to resort. Dave and Claire had been here for 10 nights and us 6 nights so when the Bula dance demo came about they had us up to demonstrate with them, we were experts at it now after all!!! Claire then introduced a new game to them of musical chairs, oh my god I have never seen anybody enjoy a new game like these guys!! Soo funny watching them as they all wanted to win really really entertaining last night and we could all see leaving tomorrow was going to be very difficult indeed.
The next day we spent sat around resort just chatting to staff and getting photos of everyone. Left some bits and peices with the staff, like shorts, playing cards etc. Simple things but for people who permantly live on an island where they live off the land and do not have shops, very helpful things. When the boat finally turned up to take us back to mainland it was very hard to leave. The staff couldn't say goodbye and there were tears and somber moods from them all. I guess spending much longer then most do here we got to become friends with them all spending all day and evenings with them. Really gutted to be leaving and everyone on ferry was very quite on way back. We said farewell to Dave and Claire at next island along as they still had another week in Fiji at a couple other resorts (lucky gits), we then also watched as Will and Katie left the boat at another island for a final night and then myself and Andy we left to go back to mainland and await our flights out the following day. Headed back to same resort and met a couple Aussies and a Brit who had spent a night at the island resort earleir in the week. The next day Andy had an early flight so he was up and out before I was awake. I had all day at resort to chill as my flight not until 11pm. Got taxi to airport and my time in Fiji was at an end. Came here expecting a real quite time relaxing on a beach. Although this was achieved I also met some fantastic people on the island and never thought it would be so difficult to leave, I would of expected after a week I would be ready to get back to civilization, although quite the oppoisite had occured and I now wanted to stay!!! This may also be due to the fact however that once I had arrived in LA I realised that the only remaining flight was to be my return leg back to wonderful London Heathrow!!!! Oh yes then end is nearing and nearing fast. Good news about USA mind you was that Russ and Jo (from UK) were going to be here on holiday and I was going to be meeting up with them in San Fran as well as catching up with Chris who had been living out here for a few years now.
See you in the US of A, its nice, I like!
