We began our drive towards Melbourne today at midday and stopped off at the capital Canberra en route for a couple hours. Saw Old Parliment House and Tower Hill but it has to be said that all in all this is a very very quiet village of a city with not a lot going on at all, very bizzare that a capital can be soo quiet? Not a lot to keep us around here so continued the drive onwards towards Canberra and stopped off in Albury (last town in NSW before cross over to Victoria). We put the two tents up in a local park which was deserted and since dark no one could see us so a nice free nights accomodation once again!!!! The reason for stopping in Albury was due to us needing to transfer the car into our names. Yes I know we bought it 6 weeks ago, but the car was registered in NSW so to avoid additional charges we wanted to register it here in our names........ We also then needed to ring various toll booths etc that we had driven through to ensure we did not now get thrown out the country for toll avoidance since we were now the legitimite owners of the car, not strictly the correct way to purchase a car and put in your name, but hey, I dont live there!! haha.
Anyway with that out the way we drove onwards to Melbourne and arrived and checked into a hostel where we got another free nights accomodation courtesy of the girls we bought the car off. (they didn't purchse it for us, they had some vouchers left over from a package deal they booked and never used these vouchers). Only supposed to be used by the names on ticket, but we walked in said we had these tickets but had lost them, next thing all four of us (Andy, myself, Nick and Matt) have a free nights stay, to easy!!! That day we went up the Sky Tower (told you every city has one!!). Once again awesome views over the city and could see awesome views of the rugby ground and the Formula 1 circuit and pits. That evening (no wait for it not beers) we went for a big fat curry and this was deffo the most expensive meal i have had in the last 9 months, but boy oh boy did it taste good!!! After this went to a bar and met Andy (guy I met in Thailand) and yep now you guessed it we had a few beers. Smiffy and Andy went home but me Nick and other Andy had room for a few more beers still so headed to another bar, after which me and Nick got lost walking home but eventually got on the right tracks back to hostel, good old drunken instinct!!
Next day we drove out to Pin Oak Court. Not sound familiar, how about Ramsay Street!!! Oh yeah boy, good old Neghbours setting. Unfortunatley they were filimg at the time so couldn't see the street, but to our advantage it did mean we saw Harold, Lou and Paul Robinson, does it get any better then that!!! I dont think so. After this we headed back into city and went to the Old Gaul which is where Ned kelly was hung. Pretty interesting place but kind of eerie at same time.
We headed off early in morning down towards the Great Ocean Road. Stopped off at various lookouts along the road and also at the many popular more famous sights such as Split Point Lighthouse, 12 Appostles (which Smiffy repeatadly informed us had now been reduced to just 11, thanks Smiffy), Thunder Cave Blowhole and Loch Ard Gorge. All of these were fantastic sights and although the weather was not the perfect sunshine you would hope for such a drive it was still thouroughly enjoyable and definatley somthing worthwhile having your own car to do it in......... I say that we were actually quite lucky the car made it back to Melbourne. Now the car had been fine all down the coast, but since that long drive from Byron Bay it seemed to be getting even thirstier then previous, oh yeah and the tappetts had been sounding since way up at Airlie Beach!!! Anyhows, the car was consuming about a litre to 2 a day. It now required more like 4-6 litres a day and now and again you would get a strong smell of buring oil, uh oh, we were to be selling this car in a few days time back in Sydney!!! Oh well as long as we get back to Sydney all will be good. We just wont mention the 2000 litres of water we have gone through or the 6 litres of oil!!!!
Went and met Andy in his hostel that evening for a few drinks before we would head back up to Sydney. Really liked Melbourne and shame once again that we had to do a bit of a rush job on it, however what was seen was certainly memorable and glad we made the drive down here. Back to Sydney now for a few days prior to our departure to pastures new across the sea.
