We headed to the the Mahinapau hotel near Lake Mahinapua. It is known as the Poo Pub to the Kiwi bus which exclusively stay there. The whole point of going there was to have a party and not just any party ... a fancy dress party. We were given the theme of Rugby World Cup - Support your team! It was quite a long drive so on the way Josh made us play speed dating to get to know more of the new people. The people near the windows stayed still and the people in the aisles changed seats every 2 minutes.
After that we arrived in a town called Greymouth where we had to find a costume of some sort. I looked for an England T-shirt and white skirt to go as a cheerleader but the only T-shirts I could find were huge and I couldnt find a white skirt anywhere. So I bought some white kitchen bin bags to make myself a dress out of, some red tape and some pom poms. It wasnt too long a drive now to the Poo Pub.
When we arrived we were all slightly underwelmed as where we were staying looked like those metal sheds that builders have for their staffroom. There also wasnt any duvets so once again it was sleeping bags. Thankfully though there was a heater. We had time to walk to see the lake if we wanted but none of us did as it was raining. I sat and made my costume instead. I cut the bottom off the bin bag so I could wear it as a dress. I made a few extra layers of skirt on top so it wasnt see through and stuck some red crosses on it. I also made an England sign out of the red tape and made it into a sash. But before we got ready it was time for our group meal. The man who owns the pub called Les (he is the oldest publican in New Zealand) was making us a BBQ dinner. We each got a massive slice of steak , some baked potatoes, venison stew, vegetables and coleslaw. It was absolutely delicious. The steak was perfect and the stew gorgeous. Yum yum yum. We then went to get ready for the party.
Some of the boys went as English knights, two girls went as the Queen, one girl as the Eiffel Tower and another as a Canadian beaver. The Scottish boys had their kilts on! Everyone looked really good. Kat and Alex won the fancy dress. Alex was a Maori warrior wearing only a grass skirt and drawn on tattoos and Kat was an All Black by dressing head to toe in black which included a pair of tights over her head covering her face. The pub was quite small and very old fashioned. The ceiling was covered in old hats and the walls covered in photos of all the Kiwi groups over the past 10 years or more! We also had our group photo taken. There wasnt really anything to do there apart from drink but the drinks werent that cheap so most of us were in bed by midnight. I bet we werent the liveliest group he has had.
In the morning we got up had our breakfast and got on the coach to go to Franz Josef to see the glacier.
