I bought an extra bus ticket for 4 days travelling further south. The first stop was Dunedin. We stopped to see Clyde dam and had lunch in the small village of clyde. The drive was very beautiful. Our driver was called Don, he was quite old but very nice. When we got to Dunedin he gave us an hours tour around Dunedin in the bus. He took us to Baldwin street which is officially the steepest street in the world. We walked to the top of the street, it was steep but thankfully not very long. There were little steps going up all the way only about an inch high. I also quite liked how they put a water fountain at the top of the street. We then went back to the hostel to check in. We were too late to do a tour of the Cadburys factory as it was closed which was a shame as I was looking forward to free samples! We had something to eat and then went to the Octagon area to watch the Rugby. Afterwards we went back to the hostel to bed. I think we were all still recovering from Queenstown.
The next morning we were up early ready for a busy day ahead. We were driving to Invercargill but stopping many times along the way to walk and explore the landscape. Our first stop was at a beach called Kaka point. We walked out along the point and on the way saw some nesting birds and cape fur seals down below us. We carried on walking right to the end where there was a lighthouse. In the sea below were lots of rocks and they are known as nuggets. On the way back we passed a beach where there are rare yellow eyed penguins but they are usually only seen at sunrise and sun set. As it was the middle of the day we didnt see any. We drove further through the Caitlins area and stopped at another beach called Canibal beach. Here we were hoping to see some sea lions. We did they were laying on the beach just infront of the grassy edge. We had to keep a distance of about 10m away. They were really big and fat. One was laying on its own and then further along was another one even bigger. They kept flicking sand on themselves. We walked further along the beach and came across two laying together. One was a lot bigger than the other. Don said they were both males. The smallest one sat up for us and yawned before flopping back down and using the bigger one as a pillow. We then cut across the grassy partand came out at another beach. Here we looked at the seaweed. It was massive. Don got some and screwed it up in his first, he made a bouncy ball out of it. He then made a purse out of another piece. On the rocks were lots of muscles and some of them were massive, the biggest ones I have ever seen. We then saw a sea lion with a pup. This one sat up to protect the pup and growled at us a bit. We took photos and then started to walk back to the bus. On the way back we saw two of the sea lions running back into the sea. It was then time for lunch so we stopped at a little cafe at the side of the road.
After lunch we stopped to do a couple of walks in some forests. The first one was to see Lake Wilkie a mirror lake and the second time to see the Mclean falls. After that we headed to Curio bay, another place where the yellow eyed penguins live. It was getting late so we hoped we would be lucky and see some. We walked down the cliff and sat on some rocks on the beach, waiting for the penguins to come out of the sea. We sat there about half an hour waiting and nothing came. Just as Don shouted down to us it was time to go, one penguin jumped out of the sea onto a rock. We stayed 5 more minutes to get a closer look and some photos. It was quite tall and slim. We got back in the bus and drove to Invercargill the most southern city in the world. It was 8pm when we arrived. We quickly got checked in and went to the bar next door to watch the England game. Then it was shower and bed time. What a busy day!
The next morning we were up early again and headed to a town called Te Anau. It wasnt very far and we didnt stop on the way. We arrived about 10:30am. Our hostel was opposite the lake so had great views. I had a walk around town which was very nice and did some food shopping. I went back to the hostel and made some food. It was raining slightly so I found a jig saw puzzle to ammuse myself with. A 1000 piece puzzle. I was making good progress but another girl called Melanie helped me complete it as it would have took me too long on my own. We did it! So feeling a sense of achievement I had a cup of tea and went to bed.
