On leaving Cossack we had a cursory look around Wickham, Dampier then headed further south before taking the turnoff into Onslow. Finally at Onslow Hotel, Avan was able to order a feed of lamb shanks, which were worth the wait. We left Onslow and took a quite rough track out to Old Onslow, situated on a tidal creek. Apparently the area had been prone to Cyclone damage and flooding, so the town was moved to its present location. We then continued south to Exmouth...

Cossack is a very early Australian settlement, near the town of Roebourne. Cossack has been abandoned for many years, but in recent times a concerted restoration project has been undertaken and the town is beginning to return to its former look.

Between Broome and Port Hedland is one of the longest beaches in the world, the 80 mile beach. We stopped here for the night to again try our luck at fishing, this time finally, success. Avan managed to hook and land three nice sized threadfin salmon, which were promptly cleaned and eaten, fantastic. While we were cleaning our fish some fellow travellers came up from the beach to announce they had just watched a turtle lay her eggs.

Next stop Broome and the famed Cable Beach. Cable Beach is so named as this is where the undersea cable connecting Australia to the outside world came ashore. Cable Beach is now used for camel safaris and is popular with those wishing to take in a sundowner (a drink as the sun sets). It also happens to be a legal free (nude optional) beach. Broome has a very cosmopolitan population, which partially stems back to its pearling days which relied heavily on Japanese...

After Kununurra we head on to Wyndham, where Avan used to work many years ago in the meat works. We stopped off on the way for a swim in the Grotto, a secluded swimming pool surrounded by cliff face with a waterfall when it rains. Very popular with meat workers in the 70's.When we arrived at Wyndham we were surprised to find little of the meat works remained.
