On leaving Cossack we had a cursory look around Wickham, Dampier then headed further south before taking the turnoff into Onslow.
Finally at Onslow Hotel, Avan was able to order a feed of lamb shanks, which were worth the wait. We left Onslow and took a quite rough track out to Old Onslow, situated on a tidal creek. Apparently the area had been prone to Cyclone damage and flooding, so the town was moved to its present location.
We then continued south to Exmouth, which was formerly home to a large US air force base. We passed through Exmouth into the Ningaloo National Marine Park crossing Yardi Creek to take the 4WD only track onto Coral Bay. Ningaloo Reef Marine Park is spectacular and is certainly up there alongside the Great Barrier Reef as a dive spot. The reef is home to the enormous but harmless whale sharks, which visit for a limited season from about April to June. Also at Coral Bay it is possible to access the reef by snorkel, a few metres from town.
