We set off from Coral Bay quite early as our plan was to make it to Mt Augustus for sunset. We had phoned ahead and booked into accommodation in the Mt Augustus resort and also made a reservation for the evening meal.

Our first stop was at the Minilya river to check out the very original tractor which appears to have been steam driven. Then it was off south again until just short of Carnarvon where we turned off to Gascoyne Junction, where we took a quick drive around town. Another 78Km to Dairy Creek Homestead where we took a left and headed up to Cobra station where again we had a look around. Now only 38 Km from Mt Augustus we had made good time to catch the sunset.

When we arrived at Mt Augustus we drove to a look out point a short distance from the rock and soaked up the serenity in the fading light with only us and various fauna in attendance. Once the sun had set we pushed on the final 10k or so to the resort.

Things now went a little pear shaped. We were told we were not expected, but not to worry they had a room. We were a little surprised that the room (charged at normal resort rates) was in fact a very basic donga. Never mind we unpacked and proceeded up to the main area for dinner. They had again forgotten we were coming, never mind we could join them for a community BBQ. This was principally for some local teachers but half way through cooking some of the local aboriginals also arrived. They promptly served themselves meaning that only Heather and Shashana managed to get a feed. Eventually a bar staff managed to wander into the kitchen and prepare Avan a meal.

Undeterred the next morning we were up and toured the full extremity of the rock, we then climbed both ends of the rock. There was also a climb up the centre but by now we had run out of time. Vowing to come back some time and tackle the centre climb we headed off on the long trip home.

The night drive home turned out to much more difficult than we anticipated. The road south through Murchison Settlement is very isolated and teaming with nightlife, after playing dodgem with all manner of fauna we eventually made it home in one piece.
