Travelling in January, the height of the wet season is a gamble.
The sky became VERY black as we headed northwards in the late afternoon and we became acutely aware that we had now crossed into the tropics where the season is the wet. We ran into heavy rain that would dramatically stop and start and as dusk fell we found a roadside camp that luckily had a bit of a shelter, just big enough to set our tent up in. We do manage to usually, just find the right camp at the right time!
The next day we had the amazing sight of swollen rivers to cross, as we headed up to Karratha in the very sticky, tropical weather. The weather was kinder during the next two nights that we spent at Karratha, with only a little light rain. We had a lovely visit with and great hospitality from Linda Webster (Murray was working in Perth) while in Karratha.
Finally we travelled the last full day run into Broome, our destination for this section of our trip, with black skies and swollen rivers reminding us that we were now truly enjoying the wet season.
It was a wonderful occasion to surprise Syd and Kim (Brother and sister-in-law) as whilst they knew we were planning a visit they did not expect us to turn up for a week or so.
