We went for a walk this morning down to the beach, we got told about a turtle conservation that was on the beach and wanted to find it.
It was pretty hard not to spot; we were looking for a ginormous turtle filled with sand which they put the nests of turtle eggs.
There were about 50 nests in the turtle all labeled, the guy that worked there was really passionate about them and had been working there for 15 years voluntarily; He calls himself 'Mr.Turtle'!
He was pulling sand back from a couple of nests to check whether they were hatching and the baby turtles were making their way up to the surface; the one nest was ready and we were lucky enough to see a baby turtle's head poking through the sand! Mr. Turtle said that they go underneath each other and push one another up through the sand and yeah the surface one by one, creating a sort of tunnel.
So the day after tomorrow they will be releasing the baby turtles into the sea. So we have to come down and see that!! The Bali sea turtle conservation is sponsored by coca cola, quicksilver and guarda Indonesia air company.
The process of protecting the eggs seems to be working though because the stats on the board in the little office they had there showed that between the years of 2002-2008 there were only 5000 eggs laid by the rare and endangered Oliver Ridley sea turtles on Kuta beach and ever since then the number has risen in high numbers; in 2014 33,000 eggs were laid on the beach. Just by protecting them in the nest and the first couple of hours when they hatch the percentage of turtles that hatch and survive goes from 20% to 90%, the ratio is still only 1 out of 1000 sea turtles living but I think it has to be more now, here anyway. There wouldn't be just a few turtles laying their eggs every year or every couple months here, surely!
We facetimed home this afternoon, finally! It's been nearly 5 weeks since I last seen them mum and dad! Not long left now and I'll see them in the flesh!
We soaked up the sun and this evening we went and had a little splurge in adidas, getting ourselves ready for when we get home and start training again. We had a look at some of the kit and the trainers, it's cheaper than at home. So we both got ourselves a pair of trainers and some sports gear.
