The Awesome Foursome
Trekking Day 2 -
We got up early this morning, had a hearty breakfast and prepared for another day of trekking.
Before we left we gave the village children some of the toys we bought yesterday, their eyes lit up as they saw the plastic animals and we had a rewarding 10 minutes playing with them.
Then it was straight on with the walking directly onto a nice big hill (no change there then!!). When we finally reached the top, Sammy and the local village man cut us all walking sticks from bamboo - with our new sticks we marched on. Along the way Sammy picked us mangos from the trees and we had a couple of much needed rest stops!
After walking for a good 3 hours we finally saw sight of the elephant camp, Barry was so excited by this he skidded down the hill scraping his leg! We had lunch watching the elephants play then it was time for our relaxing elephant ride (or so we thought!). We eventually got onto the elephants after worrying we were hurting them by standing on their heads!
The ride was bumpy and very scary at times, especially when jody and kirsty's elephant decided to take short cuts!
We reached our drop off point and said goodbye to our elephants after a most enjoyable and exhilarating experience. We had a short walk to another Karen tribe village, where we stopped for a rest and Jody and Kirsty bought a 'village made' bracelet each.
We gathered together the injured (the swedish bloke in the group had hurt his knee...and off course barry and his gashed leg!) and started on our final leg of today's trek. Almost immediately we had to wade through a river - which felt very Indiana Jones stylie!
After more hard walking we reached another river thinking we were nearly there (Sammy said it wasn't much further, but we had 2 options; across the river which may be chest deep, or along the river which meant a slight hill), we opted to walk and tackle the slight hill, however the slight hill soon became a rock climbing expedition up a vertical cliff! All good fun except for barry! Finally reaching the village was an immense relief.
After our rest period (well we all collapsed!) it was time for dinner another big feast and a gorgeous thai yellow curry. After-dinner games consisted of sammy teaching us thai logic puzzles with sticks and jenga with a lovely little village boy.
