Kalbarri - Overlander Roadhouse (fuel) - Denham - Whalebone Bay
423kms / 6 hrs
Sadly we were leaving Kalbarri today so we packed up and filled the water tanks up and got away around 9am. We stopped at Hawk's Head river gorge in the Kalbarri National Park and went to the lookout overlooking the Murchison river and the rocks jutting out of the cliff face which looks like a Hawk's head.
We then continued driving and saw lot's of dead kangaroos on the road. We stopped at the Overlander Road house for fuel and then turned into Shark Bay World Heritage area. It is actually a long way from the main highway into Denham and at first its similar to the Nullarbor and then you finally start to see the crystal clear blue water and then it gets exciting.
We were running short on time so we quickly stopped at Shell Beach Conservation Park. There are millions of small white coquina shells and it's estimated that in some spots the shells are 10 metres deep. It was actually a fair distance from the start of the beach to the actual waters edge but was really easy to walk on the shells as you don't sink (like sand). The water was so crystal clear and inviting but we just had a quick play in the shells and made a shell castle and then it was time to keep moving.
We arrived at Whalebone Bay which is where we are staying tonight right by the waters edge and unhitched the caravan and then drove into Denham. We went to the Visitors Information Centre to obtain a permit for Monkey Mia tomorrow and had a look at the Anglican Church which is built out of the shells from Shell Beach. We had a quick drive through Denham then headed back towards our campsite. We stopped at Eagle Bluff which is a 200 metre boardwalk along the edge of the bluff where you can observe marine creatures and views over shark bay. We saw lot's of schools of fish but that was about all. In the warmer months you can see Sharks, Turtles, Dugong's etc.
We got back to our campsite and while we set-up the kids had a great time playing on the waters edge and collecting shells.
Roger cooked a yummy BBQ outside of sticky lamb ribs with vegetables and we ate it outside watching the beautiful sunset overlooking the water.
Unfortunately you can only stay at our campsite for one night so we were hoping to stay at Monkey Mia Resort tomorrow night but they are fully booked so it looks like we will have to stay in Denham (hopefully someone has a site available) and then we will hopefully come back to Whalebone Bay for another night.
