Day 67 - Margaret River
After 9.5 weeks on the road we woke up to our first rainy day. It’s raining, cold and windy!
We drove to Augusta and went to Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse. It’s Australia’s tallest mainland lighthouse and is situated at the most south-westerly tip of Australia, where the Indian and Southern oceans meet.
As we were getting blown around by the wind Josh nearly stepped on a snake. We didn’t expect to find any snakes on the walking track with it being so cold but thankfully he saw it and could stop before he stepped on it.
We looked at the Old water wheel and watched the waves crashing into the shoreline.
Next we drove to Boat Harbour which is a beautiful new marina and out of the wind so the boys could go fishing. They both caught a squid in between rain showers.
We then stopped to look at Granny’s pool but then it started raining again so it was a quick dash back to the car.
We then drove to Jewel cave and went on a one hour guided tour at 1:30pm. Jewel cave is the largest show cave in WA with 4 massive chambers. We walked down the stairs into the cave and it’s so huge and like a natural cathedral. We saw stalagmites, flowstones and shawls towering above us. We saw delicate straws (one was over 5 metres in length), unique formations including; the frozen waterfall, organ pipes and coral formations.
Next stop was Boranup Gallery which showcased lots of timber slab tables, paintings, metal sculptures, pottery, glass etc.
Then it was time to visit our first winery Redgate. We tried lots of wine and the kids loved asking lots of questions.
Next stop was Redgate Surfing beach and it was so choppy and cold so we kept driving.
We then went back to the campground and we are the only ones staying. It’s so quiet and peaceful apart from the howling wind and heavy rain!
