Catherine and I headed across the road to book in for our half day of Canyoning. There was a group of 6 girls in total and we arrived at the Queenstown canyon and had to get all geared up. This involved putting wetsuits, life jackets and helmets on. Each of us had an individual name on our helmets to identify us for the photo's that they'd be taking of us. Catherine was Spunky and I was Kesha! We then walked across a stream and climbed some rocks and arrived at our first zip wire. We had safety harnesses on that we had to release and attach to the zip wire and then one of the instructors helped to attach us to it. We then had to walk to the ledge and then zipped across the canyon. It was really fun and I tried not to look down too much as I went across the water. This one was followed by three more zip wires of different speed and length. On one of them you had to quickly run up and jump on the rock but when it felt like I wasn't getting enough momentum I felt the need to grab onto the zip wire which is not advisable as it burns, but it felt like a better idea than going backwards and going back above the canyon again!
During the morning we had to do a series of activities such as going down a mini waterfall backwards, jumping off a 6 metre high rock and abseiling. One of the scariest things was going across on a zip wire until you're half way and then you had to release yourself by taking off one of the safety harnesses and then pulling the rope that is tied round the harness so that you can slowly lower yourself down, and then when you are still in the air you release the rope so that you plunge into the water. It was the most scary as it was the one that I had to control rather than having the instructor do it as I trust them a lot more than I do myself. We also slid down waterfalls, scrambled across rocks and did superman jumps into the water. It was so much fun - a lot of it was out of my comfort zone, especially the times where I was at a great height but I was so glad I did it. All the girls were really nice too and we had really good instructors. We finished the morning about 12pm and it felt like we'd had a really good amount of time there - I was glad that I hadn't signed up for the whole day as I would have been exhausted.
When we got back to the main office we were given a cup of tea to warm ourselves up and we watched on a big screen our photo's and video's. Catherine and I purchased ours as a reminder of the fun that we'd had. I got a text from Huw asking if we'd survived and if we were still up for going to Bob's Peak so we headed back to the hostel to meet him. Huw decided to hike up whereas Catherine and I went for the more leisurely option of the gondola after all our exertions that morning so he set off and we agreed to meet him up there.
You take the gondola from just around the corner of the main streets in Queenstown and the gondola gives the most amazing views of Lake Wakatipu and the town below. It was such a beautiful day that it looked stunning. Gemma had trekked up with Huw so we met them at one of the viewing platforms and watched people luging, which involves riding on three wheeled carts along a trak - they aren't motorised so just work on the law of gravity. We then all moved to a higher point and spent ages just looking at the views and watching people paraglide. You can see the Remarkable mountains and Lake Wakatipu from this point, and we'd read that it is the second largest lake in the Southern islad, covering 290 square km.
Catherine and I had bought two tickets to do the luge so we headed off to do that whilst Huw and Gemma took photo's for us. To get used to the luge you have to do the scenic track first so we tried that, which was really good fun and then went on the chair lift to get to the advanced track. The advanced one has big bumps and windier bends so that you go a lot quicker. We raced round and had lots of fun. As we'd been up there for sometime we decided to get the gondola back down again.
After heading to the supermarket for provisions for a group dinner with Nasreen, Kristina and Gemma who were going to Mount Cook with me the next day Huw, Catherine and I headed to Fergburger which was to be my last of these burgers on my trip. Catherine and I chose two burgers and asked them to be cut in half so that we could have half each as there are so many amazing options. Catherine had decided earlier that day to stay in Queenstown longer as she has extra days and really liked it there. I was really sad as I was really looking forward to spending the next few days with her and I knew that I would have to be saying goodbye to her that evening. As it was our last night together we bought some cider and sat out on the grass area by the lake and Nasreen, Kristina and Gemma joined us. Nasreen said that she'd seen Heather and Dan who were back from their hike and that tehy would come and join us, which was really great as I didn't think I'd see them. They arrived about 9pm and it was really good to see them and they told us all about their time in Milford Sounds. At 10pm when you're not allowed to drink at the beach any longer we headed to Altitude Bar. Heather was really tired after the hike so we said our goodbyes again and Dan decided to join us for a quick drink. When we got into the bar Stefan (who was the big German guy - who I knicknamed the BFG - who had been on the beginning of our trip with us and who had left to do the East Cape trip) spotted us. It was really good to see him. We all had a few drinks and a dance and then we moved onto the World Bar. Huw and I shared a teapot and then Stefan called it a night. Saying goodbye and thinking about saying goodbye to Catherine made me feel very nostalgic and I started getting emotional! I gave Catherine a big hug and told her that I would miss her. We all danced together and then about 1am we decided to call it a night as we had an early start the next day.
When we got back to the room Ali, an English guy who was in our dorm (who we'd noticed had an extremely beautiful body when he was changing) came back and we had a chat in bed about guys asking for a male perspective. Catherine said that she would get up early to say goodbye to me in the morning.
