Farewell Spit is a thin strip of land, mainly sand dunes that stretches out from the north western corner of the South Island. We wandered across some farm land before reaching the beach which was again completely isolated so that we had the whole, windy but large beach to ourselves. We wandered along the beach until we reached the sand dunes which are surrounded by sitting water. It was quite tricky to find our way through to the other side as we would clamber up a sand dune to find water blocking our route, with such strong winds and water popping up here and there it felt as though the landscape was constantly changing and even though the area is very small you probably could get hopelessly lost. Taking the safe option we walked around the long way to reach the sea on the other side which was very calm, especially as the tide was out, and here it goes out miles. A really interesting ecosystem to explore and another part of New Zealand that many visitors don't bother to come up to see.
