This was probably the highlight of New Zealand so far. Having camped in the car park we awoke at day break to try to beat the rush of tourists visiting one of the most beautiful spots on the South Island. Lake Matheson is a fairly small mirror like lake which offers amazing reflective views of Mounts Cook and Tasman in the distance. With only a senior couple on the path in front of us we were able to reach the 'view of views' before anyone else and watched the mist rising off the lake. There were no mirror views when we got there as there was a slight breeze across the water. However, with time to sit and enjoy the tranquility of the spot we waited, it was quite sad the number of other people who just walked up took a photo and then carried on without stopping to enjoy the moment. We were rewarded for our patience as the waters of the lake settled and we were able to enjoy the spectacular views - a real highlight.
