Having explored Farewell Spit we decided to drive back along the road that runs alongside Golden Bay with the aim of reaching Abel Tasman national park that night. Unfortunately we were thwarted by a lack of petrol, we found plenty of petrol stations but unfortunately they'd all shut up shop for the day (it was only just gone 5 for heaven's sake) and we were loathe to risk getting stuck on the side of a mountain between us and abel tasman. A little frustrated we drove around the town of Takaka looking for somewhere to camp for the night, as it was getting dark we spotted a few campers down in a field near the river and pulled over for the night. The next morning we were up having our porridge nice and early before heading back for petrol and the supermarket and setting off on the road to Abel Tasman.
