After our detour to Nelson we set off to the Nelson Lakes National Park arriving at Lake Rotoroa early evening, despite there being a campsite we decided to camp alongside the lake which was very peaceful (although there was some drum and bass coming out of the car next door later on) but the wildlife weren't quite so welcoming. We had our first encounter with New Zealand sandflies which are little midges that swarm and feast on your legs, they are pretty persistent so we had to keep all the windows and doors shut. We were then also pinned in the van by two blackswans who were feeding right outside the door and being very protective of their cygnet they came pecking and hissing the moment we opened the door. Despite the threats we ventured out for a short walk though the nearby woods where the sandflies don't reside. Despite our noisy neighbours we were off to sleep after a few more hands in our marathon poker championship, we had talked about a longer walk the next morning but there were so many sandflies outside the van when we awoke we decided to hit the road and head for the West Coast.
