After a couple of days sightseeing we were eventually chased off the west coast by it's most ferocious inhabitants. After an early start and the visits to Lake Matheson and Fox Glacier we thought we'd drive a little further down the coast and find a nice spot to have lunch and a lazy afternoon. We pulled off the highway towards Lake Paringa which was a beautiful little lake where we unpacked and had our lunch, unfortunately we had our lunch standing up and furiously swatting the sandflies away. Having wolfed down our sandwiches we realised we wouldn't be able to relax and took the decision to head towards the Haast Pass to try to get off the coast. We actually stopped at two further campsites either side of the pass where the flies were as bad driving us further and further inland. It was however a beautiful drive on a lovely sunny afternoon as we headed for the lake region having completed the west coast drive.
