Soongies' Great Adventure
Time to leave Thun and head to Oberagerie (a little town near Lucerne). Kate woke up with a sore throat and Calvin was still a bit sick but we soldiered on - only a short 2 hour drive today. Our Airbnb host had baked some cookies and let us take some too.
We had booked 3 nights at an 'outdoor retreat' as it was by far the cheapest accommodation we could find near Lucerne - only 89 francs for both of us for 3 nights - that's a Swiss bargain! We booked it through hotels.com - It was advertised as a 2 person dorm with shared bathroom, kitchen etc.
As we were approaching the house snow was falling like we've never seen before all whilst we were driving up a steep winding road (it also snowed earlier in the journey on a similar type of road). On the main flat roads, it just rained!
When we arrived the owner pointed out that there was a third person staying in the room (there was a double bed and a single). We questioned why as we had booked a 2 person dorm - he said that is the fault of hotels.com and we would need to follow that up with them! Huh?? We also clarified the price. He said the 89 francs total that was in our confirmation email was an error as it was actually 89 francs per person (not per couple) so he said he would need another 89 francs! What?! We told him that our confirmation email clearly said 89 francs per room - he said this was the fault of hotels.com and that we would need to follow it up with them!
We were so frustrated at his misleading advertising and his blaming everyone else so we decided to leave - Kate told him we would give him a bad review so he was happy for us to leave and he said we wouldn't be charged. Problem was it was snowing a lot outside so Kate was a bit worried about driving in the snow - we decided that we would drive down the winding hill before the snow got worse and then we would research our accommodation options at the bottom. Everything is soooo expensive!!!
After a while we decided we would give the Lucerne campsite a try as they had caravans that you could stay in - this was only going to cost us AUD 65 a night (way cheaper than the other options). We drove there but unfortunately the caravans / cabins etc close over winter. Time for a plan B.
We sat in the car in the caravan park for ages looking into other options. The owner must have felt a bit sorry for us so he came out with a brochure with hostels for us. We ended up going with a hostel in Lucerne (AUD 365 for 3 nights) as it was one of the cheapest options.
We drove the short distance there and booked in - there was even a free car park spot for us! We then walked to the ATM so we could pay him and then later we walked to the supermarket to get dinner supplies. Calvin cooked more delicious rice porridge (it's cheap and easy). Kate sent an email to hotels.com to notify them of today's events. Then it was time to catch up on some blogging!

kentishclan Bummer guys :( As you know we also had a 'ripped off by online accomodation' experience and it really does suck. At least you didn't lose mega bucks and sounds like it didn't result in too much stress. Well done for getting assertive Kate - Calvin... next time can you video her when she threatens someone with a bad review (just her... not the other party) cos I REALLY want to see that in action :)
