Soongies' Great Adventure
The family's little boy, Yahya, had to go to an appointment in Toledo today so it was a great excuse for us all to go on a day trip there!
After having breakfast we drove the 40 mins from Ontigola to Toledo. Parking was easy so Toledo already had our vote!
Hanan, Mohamed and Yahya went to the appointment while Calvin and Kate wandered around this beautiful city! It's incredible!
The main part of the city is enclosed within the walls of a castle. There are loads of shops and other buildings. Toledo, known as the city of three cultures, used to have 3 groups - Jews, Christians and Muslims - all living harmoniously together so there's a synagogue, cathedral and mosque right near each other. We started our wandering with an appetiser of sushi which we ate while walking so we didn't waste time! Then once we got to the main square we had a pastry each from the patisserie.
With limited time to explore, we bought 2 x €5.50 tickets to go on the 45 min train ride that takes you around the walls of the city. We got to see the city from another perspective and got some great views. On the train you are supposed to get commentary through headphones but we sat at a faulty seat so we only got intermittent commentary which was a bit annoying. All good in the end though as we got €5.50 back because of it!
After the train journey we did some more wandering through the winding streets taking in the amazing sights and atmosphere of Toledo.
We met up with Hanan, Mohamed and Yahya and then we all ended up at Maccas for lunch.
It was a bit of a trek back to the car and it was getting quite warm by this stage! On the drive home (quite close to home) we came across a queue of traffic and then realised there had been a serious car accident - we were the fourth car in our direction to arrive so the accident would have happened about 20 seconds before we got there. 2 cars had been involved in a head on collision - miraculously no one was hurt or injured. The scene looked like it would have been a fatal accident.
Mohamed had a job interview to get to that afternoon so after waiting for a bit and realising it could take a while to be able to pass we turned around and went the long way around back home. Mohamed ended up arriving at his interview just in time although he was still in a tracksuit as he didn't have time to change his clothes. Apparently the accident was on the local news as cars were at a standstill for hours!
After dropping Mohamed at the train station so he could get to the interview we came home and then later on Calvin prepared dinner - red curry chicken, deep fried wontons and hoisin and garlic tofu.
