Soongies' Great Adventure
It was time to say goodbye to what had been our home for a week. We loved our stay with Hanan, Mohamed and Yahya - they were so warm and friendly and we had such great chats. And of course Yahya was just gorgeous. It was sad saying goodbye but hopefully it was more of a 'until next time' kind of goodbye.
Hanan had given us a whole bag of snacks to keep us going on our 5 hour drive to San Sebastián - Kate particularly enjoyed the chocolate and strawberry tart for lunch!
After a smooth journey (and Ruth advising us on FaceTime that we played Pooh-sticks and not 'sticky poo' in Bournemouth) with a couple of toilet stops we arrived at the Airbnb at about 3:15 pm. We were warmly greeted by the owner, Asier, and were then shown around. Such a great Airbnb - there are 4 rooms that they rent out and the whole house is set up for Airbnb. There is a traveller hang out area and lots of maps and tourist books. Asier sat down with us for about half an hour explaining everything and telling us about all the good restaurants and even which dishes to get.
It was a short walk to the bus stop and then we caught the bus into town (about a 20 min journey). First stop was the Mercado de la Bretxa where we bought a small container of fresh olives to snack on while we explored.
We walked up Monte Urgull where we had wonderful views of San Sebastián - the city and the ocean. At the top of the hill was a small fort and a statue of Christ. After taking lots of photos we walked back down to the bottom where we saw waves crashing into the walls. We had hoped to see a good sunset but another big hill got in the way!
San Sebastián is famous for their pintxos - their version of tapas so of course we had to experience that for dinner. Using our Airbnb's hosts's recommendations we bar hopped to 5 different places trying lots of different pintxos. We even had cheesecake at the last one! It was amazing but soooo filling. After dinner we strolled back to the bus stop via the waterfront so we could see it lit up at night. And then we caught the bus back home. WE LOVE SAN SEBASTIÁN! It's got everything - mountains, ocean, good food, amazing streets, mild weather, great views. And this is what we have discovered in one afternoon / evening!
