Soongies' Great Adventure
It was early. Well, earlier than usual which meant being awake and up at 8 am instead of the usual 9 am.
Mohamed had to go somewhere on the train to get his forklift ticket and he needed to be at the train station by 8:30 am. Calvin and Kate drove Mohamed to the station in a timely fashion - Calvin still gets nervous driving on the other side of the road, especially during peak hour (although peak hour probably isn't so bad in little Aranjuez).
At home, Calvin and Kate were just about to sit down for breakfast with Hanan when she got a phone call from Yahya's school telling her to come and pick him up as he had had a fall and his eye was bleeding! So Hanan forwent the breakfast and rushed over to the school (luckily just around the corner) and brought him back home. Yahya had a red spot next to his right eye where he had hit it but it wasn't bleeding anymore.
As they weren't sure what happened when he fell, Hanan and the teacher thought it would be best to take Yahya to the doctor (fortunately it was Tuesday and Yahya's paediatrician was in town!) who had a look at it and thought it best to take him to the hospital in Aranjuez for a stitch as it was a deep cut in the corner of his eye socket.
So off to the hospital in Aranjuez we went with Calvin driving. Hanan and Yahya got dropped off at the emergency department where he was seen to in not too long a time.
Meanwhile Kate and Calvin went to the Mercado de Abastos in town to pick up some strawberries (Aranjuez is known for its strawberries) and a huge pineapple!
Yahya didn't need a stitch in the end, they just cleaned it out and said to massage it daily with oil so it wouldn't scan over too much.
Once Hanan and Yahya (who was understandably exhausted!) were dropped off at home, Calvin and Kate drove to Chinchón - a small town about half an hour away. Kate, of course, slept in the car and missed out on the lovely countryside views.
Chinchón is a cute town with lots of charm! Despite it being fairly misty with the low cloud, it was great walking around the old streets and little laneways where you could get lost. Old buildings and cobblestone pathways with beautifully decorated street names added to the charm of this quiet town.
We had some delicious sugary donuts to keep our energy levels up and made it to the partially destroyed medieval castle. You can't enter but we walked on the drawbridge up to door and knocked anyway - no one answered.
Driving back from Chinchón, we dropped into Aranjuez to get some chicken breast from the only Halal butcher. Calvin and Kate also treated themselves to some sushi, gyoza and edamame beans which they found in a little restaurant near the butcher!
Then it was off to the station to pick up Mohamed who was now officially qualified to operate forklifts!
At home, we were treated to a La Merienda (Spanish afternoon meal) which is like a high tea. Hanan had prepared homemade bread, buns and pastries and dips - so good! Then we all slaved away opening pomegranates and getting the seeds out!
We played Bananagrams for the evening - Hanan played in Dutch and Mohamed played in Spanish. Calvin and Kate just played in English. It was really interesting playing with all the different languages!
For supper - an enormous bowl of fruit salad.
