Soongies' Great Adventure
Today we celebrate! Kate found some shoes!! Will this be the end of shoe shopping in Europe? Will Calvin ever have to endure going to every single shoe shop in Europe ever again? Will Kate ever find the perfect shoe that will not rub against her Tailor's bunion, provide arch support and have minimal toe box volume? Well today was the day that all these questions were answered. It started off as normal - shower and breakfast (provided by the Airbnb - good to have cereal again!) before getting out of he house and taking the bus to the city centre. Wandering around Plaza de Gipuzkoa admiring the flower clock and the many green spaces around, we strolled around the shops and investigated the foot fashions in this Spanish city. Was Kate to find her shoes in one of these shops? Not quite yet! From the new part of San Sebastián we walked along La Concha beach all the way around to Mont Igeldo. We saw a different type of busker on the way - a man drawing large caricatures and designs in the flat wet sand of La Concha. Kate wasn't a fan of walking on the beach at the start - she thought it might get her current shoes dirty - but she seemed to enjoy it especially as it was sunny on the beach. We made it to the base of Mont Igeldo where we took the funicular up to the top. There were brilliant views of San Sebastián from the top and we walked around looking at the coast on the east and west sides. There's an amusement park up the top however as it was winter, nothing was open. Kate suggested walking down back into town instead of taking the funicular - it was a nice easy walk (only a little bit muddy in one section) on the road and through the forest back down to the beach. By this stage, it was siesta and almost everything was closed. We headed over to the east side of San Sebastián to Zurriola beach where all the surfers hang out. We found a bakery that was actually open and had a croissant each before making our way back to the old town and spending an hour in a sports store in Mercado la Bretxa where Kate tried on almost every available waterproof shoe in the store. Was this the place where all our questions could be answered? Unfortunately not. We walked on (had a chocolate and tropical yoghurt gelato on the way) and sat down in a cafe near Plaza de Gipuzkoa where Calvin decided to spend the afternoon editing/writing blogs and sipping on Rooibos tea while Kate headed off on a shoe hunting expedition. While Calvin whiled away the hours in the cafe, Kate was in a shop in old town called Ada. Here she tried on 6 different shoes, each time hoping it would be the one! Would she find the shoe here? The answer was a resounding 'yes'! The answer came in the form of aqua, green and yellow North Face Hedgehog Fastpack shoes. Could a shoe have been better made for Kate's narrow and thin feet? Probably not. Not only were these shoes waterproof, but they were light and soft and didn't rub on the bunion! She spent an hour walking back and forth in the shop, squeaking away on their shiny floor, testing the footwear on the stairs. There had to be a proper and decent trial in these shoes before a purchase was made! Alas, after an hour of confusing the staff in the store, Kate bought the shoes! Happy as can be, Kate reunited with Calvin and they celebrated with a freshly squeezed orange juice at a cafe followed by pintxos at Bar Zeruko, Borda Berri and Bar Munto! Bite sized amazements in all of them! Then time to head back to the Airbnb - an orange from the tree outside the front door was a perfect dessert.

kentishclan At last! Is this the Cinderella moment? Will you magically be transformed into a happy walker no longer destined to tour the world with one eye on every sports / shoe store you pass? Hope they are comfy and they last Kate :)
