Soongies' Great Adventure
After yesterday's downpour, we were blessed with sunshine and a hot 20 degree day! Not bad for Europe on the 2nd day of Spring. It was a relatively late start today but it was nice to have a bit of a lie in. Once we finally got ourselves ready by 10:30 am, we left to go to Kravice Waterfall. It was about a 40 minute drive to the waterfall back towards the Croatian border. We went on another one of those narrow winding European roads up the mountain and down the other side. It wasn't too bad aside from the fact that Bosniaks never seem to stick to their side of the road which can be particularly scary when you're going around a hairpin and the car coming towards you is half on your side of the road! The police were also out in force today - they seemed to be everywhere and even pulled us over. Fortunately they just wanted to see Calvin's licence and the car registration. Kravice Waterfalls is on the Trebižat River and thanks to yesterday's rainfall, it was pumping! From the car park, it was a short walk down to the pool at the base of the falls. Spray from the waterfall was going everywhere! Fortunately, it was a fairly hot day so it was nice to get a bit of the cold water to cool down. Unfortunately though, it was much too cold to go for a swim - and the current was really fast. There was a fair bit of water coming through the falls so the water level was higher than it would usually seem to be - lapping up over the steps and landings. In summer, people come here for a swim. We went for a walk down the river a little way as there were another set of falls further down but the track was flooded. We then headed over to Blagaj-Tekija where you can see the River Buna flowing out from a spring within the rocky cavern of a huge cliff. Next to the river is the Dervish House, a national monument which we briefly visited. The flow from the spring was huge, the water swirling down into a pool and then becoming a river. We had lunch at Vrelo Restaurant on a terrace right over the river with a great view of the cave mouth where the river originated. It was a beautiful view and the perfect spot for a feed. Calvin had a fillet of trout and Kate had a salad with grilled chicken. The free bread was particularly yummy! The water level here seemed to be quite high - it was over some of the terraces and halfway up the chairs and tables. Then it was back home to the guesthouse for some time to recuperate after a day in the sun. We headed out to get some take away from the nearby Grill Centar - a small little spot with really cheap and good local food. Calvin had pljeskavica and Kate had ćevapčići. On the way up to the room, Calvin couldn't resist giving Coco, the dog in the guesthouse, a good scratch! Then we played Backpacker (Kate won!) and did some research for our future travels.
