Soongies' Great Adventure
The sun had finally come out to play in Austria. Unfortunately, it was the day we were leaving Salzburg! We had one more stop to make in Austria before leaving the country - Vienna. Vienna was really only a quick stopover on the way to Bratislava though so we didn't really give it the time it probably deserved although, both Calvin and Kate had been to Vienna before so it wasn't too huge a deal that we only spent 3 hours in the capital city. The drive was nice and easy along the highways from Salzburg to Vienna which meant we got there at the perfect time for lunch. We headed off to the Donau Centrum shopping centre just outside of the main city area as they had a Birkenstock store there that Kate was hopeful to find a half insole that would help her shoe problem. Turns out, Birkenstock half insoles aren't really that comfortable. We decided to have lunch in the shopping centre at a Japanese place - nice change from European fare. But then we drove to the city to get some dessert (on recommendation from Temika Lee) at Paolo Bortolotti Cafe. Driving through the Vienna's main shopping street, Mariahilferstrasse, was quite nerve wracking - people everywhere and not a lot of cars around to make you feel like you were driving somewhere that was legal...! Bortolotti's was packed! Every table was taken inside and out and there were more people lining up to get take away ice-cream. We stood there for a while to get a table, and while we waited we, could see all these amazing and ginormous sundaes and sweet concoctions coming from the kitchen area. Finally we got a table and ordered a Berry Sundae - a huge serving of sugar involving scoops of vanilla, raspberry and strawberry ice-cream, fresh strawberries, frozen cherries, blueberries and raspberries, strawberry sauce and cherry sauce topped off with a mountain of whipped cream. It was delicious and demolished by Calvin and Kate in 5 minutes. That was pretty much the end of Vienna - we did drive past the beautiful Parliament Building and the Rathaus (Town Hall) where they had a large ice skating park in Rathausplatz. Overall, Vienna had amazing architecture and a very well organised city which definitely felt like a capital. Heading on to Bratislava, we crossed the border into Slovakia, briefly stopping to get an electronic vignette for the Slovakian highways. It wasn't too far to get to our Airbnb which Kate dropped Calvin off at while she drive on to get to a Decathlon store to find some shoes. Unfortunately, Kate found the driving in Bratislava, particularly the highways, very stressful - there were multiple "bear lefts" and exits which the GPS was suggesting however it wasn't very good at specifying which road and left turns to take! After a very stressful few minutes of driving on her own, she decided to head back to the apartment without getting to Decathlon. It was almost dinner time and we were due to meet Calvin's friend, Stefan, and his fiancee, Janka, at the Slovak Pub in the city centre. We drove in and stepped into a traditional Slovak establishment - the architecture and the design were typical of the time it was built but also included sections that were from different historical periods. They also served up some great traditional Slovak foods - which Stefan and Janka helped us to understand. We all shared a bread and cheese platter with traditional bryndza (sheep's cheese), another type of sheep's cheese and cheese braids - all coming from the restuarant's Biofarm. For mains, Calvin had roasted chicken pierogi with spinach and yogurt sauce and Kate had a baked camembert with salad. Stefan had what we thought was dessert - blueberry dumplings with cocoa streusel - but apparently, this was normal for a main meal. The food was great - big portions and it wasn't expensive either, despite being a common place for tourists to go to. It was a really nice evening with Stefan and meeting his lovely fiancee - some funny conversations and catching up.
