Soongies' Great Adventure
It was time to get our Sound of Music on today! The weather looked a bit dreary outside but that wasn't going to stop us. We had a bit of a sleep in then Calvin downloaded the Sound of Music songs to play in the car. We drove into the centre of Salzburg, listening to Sound of Music songs along the way, parked the car and then walked to the Nonnberg Convent (where the nuns sang 'Maria'). The chapel was closed for renovations and you couldn't go into the convent but there were some nice views of Salzburg from the outside. We also had a nice view of Hohensalzburg castle above us. Kate did a spectacular rendition of 'Maria' at the convent. We then walked through the centre and tried to warm ourselves up a bit by stopping in at a bakery. Then we walked to the Mirabell Gardens and Palace, where Maria and the children (and later Calvin and Kate) sang 'do-re-mi'. We decided that we needed to try the famous 'Sacher' cake, apparently one of the most famous chocolate cakes in the world, so we headed over to the 5 star Hotel Sacher (where they have the original recipe) to try it. Calvin loved it, Kate thought it was ok. Just nearby was Mozart's home that he grew up in so we walked there. We didn't go into the museum but at least we could say we went there! Back in the car, we drove to Leopoldskron Palace, which represented the Von Trapp residence. It is now a hotel and so we couldn't go inside the gate. We then drove to Hellbrunn Palace, where the pavilion is located - the one where the singing of 'You are 16 going on 17' happened. So of course we did a short rendition of the song while we were there. It then started to rain - perfect timing for our sound of music adventure to end. On the way home we stopped off at the supermarket and then Calvin got his much needed hair cut. We had dinner at home tonight - noodle soup with, for the first time in a very long while, bok choy!
