Soongies' Great Adventure
Leaving our favourite country (so far) was difficult - even the drive out through the north of Slovenia was still splendid and made us realise how much more we could explore the country! But on to Austria it was, crossing the border inside a tunnel - first time we've crossed countries while driving through a tunnel. The actual official border control was inside the Slovenian border and we got through that without any hitches. The first thing we noted about Austria was that there was snow everywhere. We were driving on roads that were bordered by snowy fields, snowy villages and snowy pine trees. We also noticed the heavy rain hammering down on our car as we drove along the Austrian countryside. It was beautiful though - the mountains in the distance and the low clouds drifting through were pretty. We stopped by a Salewa store on the way to our Airbnb to check if they had any Superfeet insoles for Kate - unfortunately they didn't. So we headed on to Seekirchen am Wallersee where our Airbnb was. After checking in (it was a great place - spacious and modern with views to the hills) and finishing our dinner leftovers for lunch, we headed off to check out Salzburg. It was pretty wet still but it had lightened a fair bit to a drizzle. We parked in the city and walked alongside the River Salzach and around Old Town admiring the main street and the many little alleyways shooting off into various 'platzs'. After an hour or so of wandering, we got hungry. Walking around in the wet, wind and cold makes one hungry - especially when they can smell food! We discovered a place to eat at after walking past a couple of places in Old Town (at one of the places where we were looking at the menu on the window, we overheard a tourist tell his friend that they shouldn't eat at a restaurant that serves three different cuisines - Italian, Austrian and Indian - funny but true!). We ate at Zipfer Bierhaus - apparently one of the last ancient, plain taverns of Salzburg, according to their menu. It was a really great place, the atmosphere and the coziness of it all. There was this crazy tunnel/well thing in the passageway between the 2 parlours and if you looked down through the glass, you could see a skeleton lying at the bottom. Kate had a chicken schnitzel with cranberry sauce and Calvin had beef goulash with a dumpling. Really good food for a cold and rainy day. To finish it off, we had a warm apple strudel for dessert. We headed home in the rain (still pouring) to our home where we met Caroline, one half of our very wonderful Airbnb hosts, and watched Aladdin (yes, the animated Disney movie) before bed.
