Today is going to be a bit of a hurried day, after checking out and hobbling down the hill I went and sat in a cafe for some breakfast. Now...I am hobbling because my left leg is in pain, I suspect I have pulled a muscle from climbing the Gloucester tree yesterday and then walking 16km which seemed fine at the time but oh boy I am paying for it today!
I decided that I would take the Warren Bridge Tram this morning and had to practically leg it to the tram station as I was so relaxed reading my magazine in the cafe that time ticked on rather too much and I was going to miss the morning departure and end up sitting around doing nothing all morning. Anyway...I just about made it in time for the next departure of the tram.
The tram was nice, little red thing with about 3 carriages and the driver had a sense of humour which was good. Although I didn't think all of his jokes were funny since some of them were just too cheesy! We got on route and the sun came out so we opened the plastic blinds. We went past the saw mill and down into the Karri forest. Some of the trees here are amazing!
He told us all about the different types of plants here and how the Aborigines used to cook and eat them, I never knew you could live on so much, although not all of it probably tasted very nice. We stopped at the Cascades which is a small waterfall which some nice rock formations along the banks before continuing on with our journey. We went past wineries, farms, mass stretches of forests and went over about 4 bridges before we came to the end. Just hearing about the history of this place and the rail road plan it's amazing how close WA came to a working rail network across the bottom of the South West. We went back slightly faster than getting there due to the gradient of the hills.
On return I went into the cafe near the rail crossing and had some tea and an Anzac cookie which tasted nothing like the ones I had at Ruth's house. I hobbled back to the motel and panicked as the reception was closed and I rang the emergency number before someone came back and I could collect my things and hobble down to the bus stop. Walking up and down stairs seems to be the most difficult. I made it there on time and the bus was late. The guy seemed friendly enough and I fell asleep after a while. I forgot the journey was going to be so long about 3 and half hours almost. The scenery became samey almost by the time we got to Denmark. Albany is the next town over but it's still a good way away.
Pulling into Albany was a sight to see, the coves, the inlets just being by the sea and being able to smell the salt when I got off of the bus reminded me of Ramsgate harbour (but with less seagulls ready to steal your chips! *laugh*). I was in so much pain trying to get off of the bus and took so long that someone offered to assist me like I was an old lady! The guy asked where I was from and when I said England he looked at me funny and said really? I thought...oh my god...I don't sound British anymore! Mind you...when did I ever sound English, no one ever knew where I was from.
I eventually made it to the hostel and whilst the place is nice and quiet and there are some long term residents there it annoyed me a little bit. It's a sister hostel to the one I was supposed to book into however it has none of the perks that the other hostel does especially free wifi...looks like a trip to McDonalds every day might be in order! However, at least the kitchen is clean and I get to actually cook instead of the expense of eating out all the time! Hopefully my leg will be better tomorrow and I can get out and see some of Albany, I'll be here for 5 days before going to Esperance.
The picture is me leaning out the side of the tram (obviously!).
