I woke feeling very refreshed and not at all achy like I thought the walk through the park would make me. The sand boarding bus picked me up at 8am sharp and we got on the road. I got into the bus to discover 6 men/boys and no other women. 5 under 15 and one dad who looked like he was at least 50, today was going to be interesting.
After about 30 minutes drive we made it to some farm land where we drove through to the beginning of the sand. I almost said to myself I had seen nothing like this before, the sheer size of the sand dunes but the one in Tunis was bigger. Anyway, these are still pretty massive to be travelling down at speed on a whimsical bit of board lol.
Rob the instructor took us through the basics on the tiniest of the sand dunes in the area (training dune apparently) before having us go on something slightly bigger. I will admit that there were a lot of Jesus Christ's coming out of my mouth and initial screams on the way down before it became fun and the screams turned to laughter. The laughter lasted even when I came crashing off my board into the sand and thought I had done my wrist in. I've taken worse beatings before!
Sand boarding is fun, the down route gives you such a rush, the only down side is the damn walk back up the sand dune to the top to do it all again. If its one thing which makes you tired that is going to be it! We also got to experience standing up on a board too and that is much harder than it looks. You could lie down on your front, sit down going forward, lie down going backwards, stand up or sit down going backwards. Those were the standard positions but Rob showed us a few more such as the dead cockroach? Think it's one they invented themselves in the office, along with the honeymooner which was almost embarrassing lol.
We stopped for morning tea and carried on to one of the bigger dunes. This wouldn't have been so bad apart from the fact that you started off on the level and all of a sudden dropped off over the edge and came hurtling down a steep slope, scared the s*** out of me for a second that's for sure!
We had lunch by the beach and then everyone was eager to get going again. To the biggest dune of them all! Ladies first of course...how nice of them to consider me. Anyway, I went and it was fun till I crashed and rolled at the bottom and all you could hear was shouts of 'oooh' and 'aww' like they'd just been watching a crash at a sports event. I was unhurt and I am proud to say that out of everyone I was the last one standing, I went down again and again and again when everyone else was tired and retired to the bus, I went again!
Sand boarding definitely was fun and the right choice of events for me to do today. I would do it again in a heartbeat. I leave Kalbarri tomorrow and head up to Monkey Mia where I get to swim with and feed the dolphins! Can't wait for that either and the best bit is it's free! The only downside to my travelling north at this precise moment in time is there is a cyclone coming...
The picture is of me about to tackle another run on a smaller dune.
