From Tully we drove a few hours south to Ayr. This is quite a large town about 14km inland from the coast. Day 2 in Tull was all about doing the Tully Sugar Mill Tour. We where booked on the 1:00pm tour. There are only two sugar mills in Australia the public can tour through, so the wait was worth it. Tully Sugar Mill was built completed in 1925. In 1931 a local farmers co-oerative purchased the sugar mill ftom the government. Over the years the co-operative faced many hostile takeover bids. We left Cairns at around 8:00am to get to Tully to do a tour of a large sugar processing mill. However on the way down to Tully we learnt the tour wasn't running today. We set off early this morning to get to Freshwater train station. There we would catch a train that would take us high into the oldest continually surviving tropical rainforest in the world. We left Mena Creek and headed toward Cairns. It was a slow trip due to lots of road works along the way. The country side here is beautiful. It is lush green and tropical.
