From Tully we drove a few hours south to Ayr. This is quite a large town about 14km inland from the coast. We grabbed some groceries and headed out of town over the famous Berdiken Bridge to a small town called Home Hill. Here we set up camp at the showgrounds alongside other campers. Caretakers John & Anne were very welcoming.
We stayed two nights at Home Hill. During our second day we checked out the beach town of Alva. Many keen divers come here to dive the shipwreck SS Yongola. The passenger ship sank on 23 March 1911. En route from Melbourne to Cairns she steamed into a cyclone and sank south of Townsville. All 122 aboard were lost, and traces of the ship were not found until days later. It was believed that the hull of the ship had been ripped open by a submerged rock. The wreck, which has become a tourist attraction and dive site, was not found until 1958. Now considered one of the best ship dives available to the public.
We also visited the Ayr Nature Display. This display is a remarkable collection of over 60,000 specimens collected and artistically arranged on coloured backgrounds by the late Allan Ey. This is Australias finest personal collection of fauna, displaying butterflies, moths, beetles, crabs, sea shells, reptiles, rocks and fossils. We all really enjoyed spending time here.
