We set off early this morning to get to Freshwater train station. There we would catch a train that would take us high into the oldest continually surviving tropical rainforest in the world. The locomotives were modern, but the carriages were nearly 100 years old. We were all very excited. The train was surprisingly full of tourists. As we slowly wound our way up the mountain great views greeted us of the rain forrest, Cairns and the Coral Sea.
Arriving at Kuranda we had some time to kill before taking the cable car ride over and down the mountain. I got a little anoyed here as everyone is corralled into town. And the town is lined with market type stalls selling cheap rubbish. It just seemed odd to have this tranquil train ride winding through lush green rain forrest and the arive at a quaint villiage which they had turned into the Vic market.
Anyhow we had a look around and a coffee before heading to the Skyrail. For anyone like me and Felicity who is not great with heights, this is a challenge. You jump in a little box called a gondola and ride the cable car high above the rainforrest from Kuranda to Smithfield. It was actually amazing and the views were superb. Charlie Mackayla and Mandy were loving it, at home high as the clouds. Felicity and I, loving it but not so comfortable. We made two stops at stations on the way down to do boardwalk walks and take in more views. The whole experience was rather epic and very memorable.
When we arrived at Smithfield we caught a shuttlebus back to our car at Freshwater Station. We had a quick look around the city before returning to the caravan park for the evening.
