We left Cairns at around 8:00am to get to Tully to do a tour of a large sugar processing mill. However on the way down to Tully we learnt the tour wasn't running today. So we stopped at Innisfail at the Lollipop Shop. Here they have a cafe and they also make candy. Mandy participated in the demo, making spring flower hard bioled lollies and lollipops.
From Innisfail we drove down to Tully stopping at Etty Bay for lunch. Etty Bay is a beautiful little beach getaway, set at the base of lovely lush forrest. The kids enjoyed playing in the waves.
We got to Tully early in the afternoon and set up at a free camp at the showgrounds. This was a bit of a win for us as there was a camp draft competition on as well as a dog show at the showgrounds. After the kids caught up on their homework we walked over to watch some camp draft action. It was really great to watch the horseman and wemon perform. Riding there horse they cut a young steer out of a mob and work it around the arena between gate posts. Its all very impressive. We certainly stood in the crowd, everyone there but us was wearing cowboy hats, country shirts, cowboy boots and spurs. And most onlookers enjoying a can of beer. But the crowd was great and happy to explain how it all worked to us.
From the horse event we walked over to the dog show. A slightly more refined event with people dressed up in business atire and trotting around a small arena with their manicured pride and joy. No beer cans to be seen here.
A quiet evening in the van. Tomorrow we hope to be ale to do a tour of the sugar processing mill.
Interestingly Tully has the highest rainfall in Australia with 4450mm each year.
