We spent Thurs and Friday night at the Brett's farm, Waterloo Station. It was nice to stay somewhere 2 nights in a row as we have had a different camping spot each night since we left Darwin. The kids were introduced to life on a cattle station. They saw poddy calves being fed, plenty of cattle, tractor rides, quad bike rides and even a galah that Colin shot! The Brett's have a couple of road trains to transport their cattle so the kids got to pretend they were driving a road train.
At lunchtime today we drove approx 40kms across their property to a waterhole to fish for barramundi. Despite having a lure called a "Barra Buster" we didn't catch anything. The frustrating thing was that we could see them they just weren't hungry. So don't worry about catch and release Rob- the barra live to fight another day. Benjie played with William and Lachie the Brett's grandsons and he is now quite certain he is going to be a tractor driver when he grows up.
We left for Kununurra WA, about an hour and half drive away. The kids were fascinated with border security - you are not allowed to bring in any fruit, vegetables or honey. We also gained an hour and a half on the clock. All very confusing for little minds!
We are staying in a big camping ground in Kununurra with a pool and a playground and wall to wall grey nomads.
This evening we went to the Kununurra rodeo which was an eye opening experience. We had our hot dogs and chips and settled in to watch. We were quite enjoying watch the bucking bulls and horses when a horse threw off his rider and charged the fence and promptly feel down to the ground lifeless just in front of us. General consensus was that it had broken its neck. A bobcat then came in, the horse was covered and carted away. We thought that was a good point to depart! Oh well all part of country life I guess but it does seem quite barbaric.
