Barden's Great Aussie Adventure 2015
I set my alarm for the first time on this trip to get up at 7. The sun doesn't rise until 7:30 so by time we get up and pack away it is normally 9-930 before we leave anywhere. We were doing the 5.5km Kings Canyon Rim Walk before heading to Ayers Rock Resort Campground so wanted to get an early start. The start of the walk begins with a 500 step climb which is exhausting but easy enough if you have reasonable fitness. After this it is a fairly flat walk with just a couple of staircases about halfway. At my first sight of the cliff faces and valley, the first word that popped to mind was "wow". The smoothness looked amazing and these cliffs were definitely the highlight of the walk for me. I would describe the Garden of Eden as nice but not spectacular. It would be a nicer place if it wasn’t packed with a tour group (and our boys weren’t so noisy) as it ruins the tranquility that I think this place would hold. On the other side of the valley we got another close up of the spectacular cliffs before a gradual descent back to the carpark. Matt carried Liam in the hiking backpack and Zach walked the almost the whole way with just a few piggybacks towards the end.
The Ayers Rock Resort is more of a little city then a campground. It has an IGA supermarket, 12 eateries, a police, fire station, health centre, and a service station. We were in the overflow section with many other people which I didn’t mind because it was only $10 and unpowered was $38. We could still use all the same facilities we were just a bit further from the toilets & showers.
