Hey guys. Thanks for the messages I've got from a lot of you recently. It's been good to read.
Last time I posted was on Saturday. Been a busy, but relaxing few days.
Weather has been very hot...its the hottest time of the year, but for a few hours every day you get torrential rain...then bright sun.
On Saturday afternoon, we went out to Nyali which is the posh bit of Mombasa where white people stay in nice hotels. One hotel, the Voyager, let us use their pool for the day because we were volunteers so it was nice to relax for a few hours.
Went to watch the football that night at Club Rio (which is amazing...love it there, and its 10 minutes walk away) but no station in Kenya got the Israel Russia game so we watched Scotland Italy and I must say Scotland were robbed! It was never a free kick!
Anyway god bless Karl Steel for texting me score updates which sent the group of us into cheers. When I got a text that was around full-time...me and about 8 people stood round my phone, opened the message, and cheered when he gave the news that Israel nicked it in injury time. So England only need a draw on Wednesday!
On Sunday I went to Lights market...proper African market style. It's mad. So much crap but I bought a t-shirt after arguing the price in Swahili for ages (I'm getting good at the language now).
We were pointed out as mzungu quite a lot (white person), but it isn't derogatory like it would be if you shouted 'black man' in the street at home. Either way its annoying when they think you are rich and can buy them iPods or phones or cars! And people usher you to there stall saying 'Mzungos, look. Peas.' I don't wanna buy a bag of freakin' peas!!!
When I heard the word mzungu, I looked to whoever had said it and just shouted 'Vipi! Jambo mAfrican' Mambo?' which means 'Hey! Hello African person. How's it going?' They found this funny...I'm not sure why but no-one tried to beat me up so I guess it wasn't offensive.
Sunday a woman we met at the start but went to live in the orphanage she worked at in Kilifi called Fiona was brought back by the trio who went there. Short version, its corrupt and disgusting. Brain washed kids. Not fed, ripped off, bed bugs, treated as a slave, not a volunteer, poor teaching (e.g. 2 5=8 TICK). I went to a meeting with a guy from i-to-i with her and it sounds horrendous. Chuck called it the 'African Austwich' but its a tad overexaggeration...but you still get the point. She fundraised back home in Australia and brought ten suitcases of stuff with her. Got 3 of them back, but a couple of us might be going back to Kilifi to get the other things...I-to-i can't get involved as it could bring legal issues...
On a brighter note the kids absolutely loved me and Catherine cooking Chips, Beans and Sausages and Ice Cream and jelly it was a massive success.
I took my speakers for my iPod in today which they also loved. Dancing about the day room like crazy kids.
Went with Emer to an Italian last night. In middle of nowhere so they send a free matatu to pick you up. Beautiful place on the beach and it's candlelit...great food aswell.
That's about all so keep the messages coming. Talk to you soon.
