Neil's Round the World Trip!
Hola todos! I have arrived in Santiago after an exhausting 12 hour flight. I had to wait a long time to get through Customs and Immigration. I walked into the arrival hall and was pounced upon by taxi drivers. I asked one guy how much to La Casa Roja in Barrio Brasil (where I'm staying for a week) he said: "40 pesos". That is dirt cheap like 40p so if I hadn't been so tired I would have smelled a rat but anyway got in taxi. Half-way there he says: "Esta 40,000 pesos (40 quid)" I argue with him and he stops the car and throws my backpack on the road. So I negotiated it down to 30 quid and got back in. Hey here it's a right of passage. You can't go to South America and not get ripped off so that's it been ticked off the to do list. Anyway my hostel is in the bohemian, studenty area and is really nice.
Now listen up, in my dorm there are some great people: Kiwis, Danes, Scots and a German. The German guy was really strange and basically looked like a tramp. It later transpired he was a Schizophrenic (who had murdered someone and had escapèd from a psychiatric prison in Bavaria- es verdad I'm not kidding. He was also a drug addict and alcoholic. I wasn't too happy staying in the same room as him to be honest but what could I do.
Later although a bit jet-lagged myself, Drew (Kiwi) James (Edinburgh) and Jacob (Danish) went to a nearby bar and had quite a few drinks including Pisco Sours that are really nice but so..sour! Later we got a taxi to a bar/club called La Feria which was great and doesn't close until 6am so I got back to my hostel at 8am. Also had a bit of banter with the Chilean girls as I was wearing my "Me encantan las chicas españolas" t-shirt which they didn't like!!
