Woken up at 530am by the rain and started checking we were all still dry inside! Nick had been awake for at least half an hour and neither of us could get back to sleep so we watched an episode of Mrs Brown's Boys. We had put headphones on so as not to wake the kids but we laughed aloud too often and soon everyone was up! Happy Valentines Day! Katharine got a card, Nick got a free heart token from my bottle of wine but I got zip! After breakfast, we decided to postpone schoolwork and drove off to walk the causeway to Granite Island to get Lampy's birthday present. It rained all the way there and after all the heat, it was nice to be wrapped up in raincoats and outdoors. We didn't see a thing in the water though, except a few jellyfish. We had coffee and hot chocolate at the cafe and got chatting to a local who told us all about a large seal colony that live at the mouth of the Murray River, which is accessed from Goolwa Beach. We decided to have a look on the way home and it was quite a nerve-wracking experience. It had been raining for a few hours and the sand was all boggy. The cloud was low over the ocean and the waves were fairly big so all you could see was sea spray everywhere. It took about 10 minutes driving on the sand but was well worth the trip. We couldn't see any seals but it was a great spot for a walk. We headed home for lunch and I made some more Anzacs, which meant it was nearly 230pm before we started schoolwork - it was a hard slog! After an hour we had all had enough. We donned our raincoats once again and drove off to Horseshoe Bay in Port Elliot, where we walked the beach path to Knights' Beach and watched the surfers. On the way home Nick very nearly stood on a large grey/brown snake that was trying to sunbath in the middle of the path - we were surprised as there was no sun!! Got back to the van about 530pm and Nick made bangers and mash for dinner while the kids went off to play. Another early night planned but it was after 9pm before the kids got to bed and it took them even longer to fall asleep.
