Wayne's & Bonnie's Travels
After breakfast we all loaded into 4 busses for a tour of the city. 1st stop was Hero's Square, honoring the heroes of Hungary's past. The communists tried to tear it down while they we in power but the people were able to resist it. From there we toured the city ending up at Buda Castle. We toured the castle area for a while and then went into the Matthias Church, a beautiful 700 year old Catholic Church. After seeing the church we had an hour for shopping, etc. It was hot, around 90, and quite humid. We were all ready to get on the bus and head back to the ship. On the way back we passed by the Hungarian Parliament which is a truly impressive building. We had lunch and another couple went with us to the Shoes on the Danube. It is a sculpture only of men's, women's, and children's shoes in the walkway along the Danube. It is there in memory of the Hungarian Jews who were lined up and shot by the Nazi's near that spot. It was very moving. Bonnie and I decided to do some more walking around the city. We gave up on that idea after less than an hour. We headed back to the ship and, unusually for us, took a nap. We were VERY tired. After a brief nap and a shower we both felt good again. The ship stayed in town until 9:00. The sail away was beautiful - the buildings and bridges are lit up as we glided by them.
