Wayne's & Bonnie's Travels
Our bags were waiting for us when we got up this morning - yea! We just got back from 6 hours of walking around Budapest. The trusty phone app says we walked 10.9 miles and I believe it. It was a beautiful sunny day and almost too warm. Our 1st stop was a huge 3 story market called the Great Market Hall with all kinds of fresh produce and local Hungarian crafts. We resisted buying anything and proceeded to walk across the Danube (actually we walked across a bridge over the Danube). The current on the river was surprisingly rapid. There were great views of both Buda and Pest. From there we went to a bath house (Gellert Baths) and looked around for a while. It was very lavish and ornate. Then we walked down to Buda Castle and took the funicular up to the castle. We did not go in any of the buildings since we will probably return there on a Viking tour on Monday. By now we were hot and tired and decide it was time for a break. We crossed back over the river and stopped to share a pizza and beer(s). We decided it was enough for a day and headed back to our hotel. We are very pleased with the hotel. The room is a two room suite with a balcony overlooking a courtyard. There is a fridge, microwave, and stove (not that we need them). Included is a full hot breakfast in the morning. We are glad it is about a mile from the main touristy area - it has a more local ambiance to it. After resting for a while we headed back out to get some dinner. We ended up at the same area where we ate last night. it is a mile or two from the hotel. We felt very safe walking around the city at night. We chose an Italian restaurant and again the food was good and inexpensive.
