Wayne's & Bonnie's Travels
Last night was our 1st formal night. We tried the dining room again. The service was much better but the food was only average at best. The buffet so far has been a much better option.
Today we took a 3 hour walking tour through Tallinn. It was a delightful surprise. It has a well preserved middle ages old town with cobble stone streets and historic buildings. It is another UNESCO World Heritage Site. Fortunately, it was the day after Obama's visit. Estonia has had a rocky history – being ruled by the Danes, Swedes, Russians, Germans, and again the Russians (Soviets). They gained their independence in the early 1990’s. It was interesting talking with our guide, Christina, about their concerns with what is going on in the Ukraine. 25% of Estonia’s population is made up with ethnic Russians. About half of them have not assimilated, not even learning the language. They fear that they may be next in Vladimir’s sights. After the tour we had a beer with Jan and Graeme, the couple from Australia who organized the tour. Their local beer, Saku, was delicious. We wandered around town for a while and then walked back to the ship.
